Motherhood, the past five months have been a blur. My posts to this blog have been shockingly few. But that's not to say I haven't been photographing, learning, contemplating my camera and our little relationship. Lots of developments that I'll try and mould into some more substantial posts. For starters my decision to focus on fineart landscape photography and the research I've been doing on the place of the female photographer in this particular field. Some possible London exhibitions. Setting up my own small local baby photography business - just because it makes me happy to give people pictures of the most precious thing they have, and also because it earns enough money to keep me in ND filters. My increasingly troublesome relationship with the Peak District National Park that refuses to be captured a way that expresses how it makes me feel. Some exhibitions I've been to. Some further iphone geekery....
Watch this space. Stuff will come.

Tender is the night

Recently, photography has become almost as widely practiced amusement as sex and dancing - which means that, like every mass art form photography is not practiced by most people as art. It is mainly a social rite, a defense against anxiety, and a tool for power.

The Cat Lover
"Heidi was struck by a sudden thought - what if Gordon wasn't a cat at all but a man under a spell? A man forced to don the disguise of a cat by some wicked enchantress? A man trapped in the body of a cat?
Heidi knew there was only one way to break that kind of enchantment...she lent over and warily kissed his downy cheek. Gordon's ear twitched and he stirred but instead of being transformed into a man he simply swiped her away with a sleepy paw. Heidi wasn't sure whether she was disappointed or not." A Small Theory
People observe the colours of a day only at its beginning and ends, but to me it is quite clear that a day merges through a multitude of shades and intonations, with each passing moment. A single hour can consist of thousands if different colours. Waxy yellows, cloud-spat blues. Murky darkness. In my line of work, I make a point to notice them.

On Photography and Politics
The most political decision you make is where you direct people's eyes. In other words, what you show people, day in day out, is political...And the most politically indoctrinating thing you can do to a human being, is to show him, every day, that there can be no change.

E.Y. Harburg
Words make you think a thought. Music makes you feel a feeling. A song makes you feel a thought.

Beginnings
I like pictures. Pictures can stir up all sorts of emotions. Pictures are worth a 1000 words they say (which is what I would have called this blog if someone else hadn't snapped it up!) so the aim of this blog is to talk about pictures, well mostly photos. I take a lot of photographs with love, it's kind of an obsessive hobby. I by no means want to experience life through a camera lens, there is no substitution for experiencing something with the naked eye. But what you capture on film is captured forever, remembered when you have forgotten all the little things about that moment in time. I try to make them art objects for others to enjoy. But I make them for myself first and foremost - that is important.
